Fatal Crash on I-10 Claims One Life, Another in Critical Condition
Troop B – On February 7, 2010, at approximately 2:50 AM, Louisiana State Police responded to a fatal crash on I-10 west at mile post 212.4 in St. Charles Parish. Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado, operated by Billy W. Albin (W/M, age 40) of Independence, LA, was traveling westbound on I-10 and struck the rear of a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix, operated by Michelle R. McBride (B/F, age 20) of Napoleonville, LA. McBride’s vehicle was traveling at a low rate of speed in the right lane with its hazard lights activated after a tire failure.
The passenger in the rear, center seat of McBride’s vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene. The deceased passenger was identified as a 16 year old juvenile from Napoleonville, LA. The passenger in the rear, right seat was also a 16 year old juvenile from Pierre-Part, LA. That passenger was transported to University Hospital in New Orleans, LA in critical condition.
Alcohol impairment is suspected as a factor related to both drivers. However, toxicology results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Speed is also considered to be a factor on the part of the Chevrolet Silverado driven by Albin. Seatbelts were NOT worn in either of the vehicles by any of the occupants.
Louisiana State Troopers continue to see a high amount of impaired drivers and lack of seat belt use in fatal crashes.
