Avoyelles spared in Wednesday storm

Emergency crews remove down powerlines on Smith Street in Hessmer. Work was also being done to reduce flooding on Little Corner Road, which connects to Smith Street near the downed powerlines.
While Avoyelles was under a severe storm watch, the parish was spared the brunt of the slow moving storm which stalled over western Louisiana causing bigger problems for Leesville.

In Avoyelles Parish, Sheriff Doug Anderson said the storm knocked over trees and caused some minor damage.

La. Highway 107 in Mansura was closed due to street flooding, but was reopened Wednesday morning around 10:30 a.m.

Avoyelles Parish schools were open, but were closed in St. Landry Parish.

The strong winds Tuesday and Wednesday also caused power outages in Cleco’s Avoyelles service, but all customers had been restored by this morning. Cleco's website showed 7 customers without power in Avoyelles Parish yesterday.

National Service Radar indicates from 1 to 3 inches of rain fell in Avoyelles during the 24 hour period, with the heaviest accumulation in the northern area of Wards One and Two. Leesville had as much as 16 inches.
