Mr. Rabalais, age 63 of Mansura, was born on January 29, 1949, and passed away in his home on September 12, 2012. Mr. Rabalais was a life-long educator, working at Angola State Penitentiary during the 1970s, then at Marksville Elementary and Cottonport State Prison. He returned to work at Angola in the late 1990s as a GED instructor. He was a military veteran who served in Vietnam from 1970 to 1971. Later, he served as a sergeant in the Louisiana National Guard.
His favorite pastimes were horses, hunting, fishing, frogging and, especially, training hunting dogs. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchild, Michael, and his nephew’s son, Braxton. Mr. Rabalais was anxiously awaiting the arrival of another grandchild, Maverick, who is due to be born in October.
Mr. Rabalais was preceded in death by his father, Maxime F. Rabalais; his uncle, Maxie Jeansonne; his brother, Frank Rabalais; his grandparents, Andrew and Nonie Jeansonne; and his cousin Freddie “Rock” Jeansonne.
Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Roy Rabalais of Mansura; his daughter, Natalie Rabalais of Baton Rouge; his son, J. Dexter Rabalais of Natchitoches; daughter-in-law, Lauren Mitcham Rabalais of Natchitoches; grandson, Dexter Michael Rabalais of Natchitoches; two sisters, Geralyn Rabalais Moreau of Simmesport and Joan Rabalais Price of Houma; his mother, Bessie Dupont of Mansura; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family graciously asks that donations be made to St. Mary’s School (1101 East Fifth St., Natchitoches, LA 71457) in honor of Steve Rabalais.
Visitation will be held at Escude’s Funeral Home in Mansura from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. with a rosary at noon on the morning of the service.
