E.J. DEVILLE

August 16, 1933 - August 9, 2008


A memorial service was held for E.J. DeVille, 74, of Ville Platte, at Our Lady Queen of All Saints Catholic Church in Ville Platte at 10 a.m., Monday, August 11.

Mr. DeVille died at 2 a.m., Saturday, August 9, 2008, at Ville Platte Medical Center after a short illness. He was a local businessman for over 40 years. In 1968, he opened Corey’s Furniture and Appliances, which was located where Dad’s and Lad’s is now located. In 1972, he opened Ville Platte Concrete Service and remained active in the business until his passing. A graduate and valedictorian of Bayou Chicot High School, DeVille entered the United States Air Force in 1952, serving most of his time in Japan. He was a member of the Ville Platte Rotary Club for 48 years. He served a one-year term as president of the Louisiana Aggregate and Concrete Association. He was also a board member of Citizen’s Bank.

Survivors include one sister, Ola Dean Guillory of Ville Platte; seven children, Lissette Broussard and her husband, Kelly, and Corey DeVille, all of Lafayette, Patchie Grosshans and her husband, Ed, of Ardmore, Tennessee, Dirk DeVille, Darren DeVille and his wife, Kelly, and Jeff DeVille, all of Ville Platte, and Arianne DeVille of Aventura, Florida; and two grandchildren, Jim and Erin.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxie Rae Ortego DeVille; one sister, Gloria Broussard; and his parents, Evans and Ola DeVille.

LOLA LAVERNE WEST

October 24, 1941 - August 10, 2008


PINE PRAIRIE - A memorial service will be held for Lola Laverne West, 66, of Pine Prairie, at Friendship Baptist Church in Pine Prairie at 12 noon, Saturday, August 16.

Ms. West died at 7:27 p.m., Sunday, August 10, 2008, at Savoy Medical Center in Mamou.

Survivors include two sons, Daniel Guillory of Oberlin and Chauncy Guillory of Opelousas; three daughters, Felicia Morrow and Jerrimy Davenport, both of Pine Prairie, and Sherron Lachney of Ville Platte; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

BRENDA GAIL WILLIAMS

March 20, 1952 - August 5, 2008


Funeral services will be held for Brenda Gail Williams, 56, of Ville Platte, at the Owens-Thomas Funeral Home Chapel in Ville Platte at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 16. Burial will follow in the St. Matthew Cemetery.

Ms. Williams died peacefully Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at Ville Platte Medical Center.

Survivors include her common-law husband, Lee Ray Jacko of Ville Platte; her father and step-mother, Odell and Mary George of Houston, Texas; two sons, Don Williams and his wife, Joann, and Christopher Williams and his wife, Swanson, all of Houston, Texas; one brother, Russell George Sr. and his wife, Pamela, of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren, four step-sisters and one step-brother, all of Houston, Texas; a special niece, Angel George of Ville Platte; special friend Elvenia Ardoin of Ville Platte; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Audrey George; and one brother, Victor Roy George.

Rev. Leroy Jack will officiate.

Owens-Thomas Funeral Home of Ville Platte will be in charge of arrangements.

MARY MAE FONTENOT PITRE

May 13, 1929 - August 8, 2008


Mary Mae Fontenot Pitre, 79, of Ville Platte, passed away peacefully at her residence Friday, August 8, 2008. She was an exceptionally loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Maurice Pitre of Ville Platte; four children, Chris Pitre and his wife, Hedy, of Eunice, Carmen Moran of Miami, Florida, Steve Pitre and his wife, Cindy, of Lake Charles and Liz Pitre of Ville Platte; five siblings, Herman “Boy” Fontenot of Scott, Dick Fontenot and Ann Lafleur, both of Ville Platte, Robley Fontenot of Dallas, Texas, and Mona Moran of Port Barre; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Carlos Pitre.

GERTRUDE JOHNSTON

July 20, 1936 - August 13, 2008


Funeral services will be held for Gertrude Johnston, 72, of Ville Platte at the Ardoin Funeral Home Chapel in Ville Platte at 2:30 p.m., Friday, August 15. Burial will follow in the Chataignier First Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ms. Johnston died at 7:40 a.m., Wednesday, August 13, 2008, at Savoy Medical Center in Mamou. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister.

Survivors include one son, Keith Huval of Eunice; three daughters, Jenny Kessner and Faye Huval, both of Eunice, and Becky Latour and her husband, Bart, of Ville Platte; one brother, Don Saucier of Eunice; two sisters, Amarella Dupre of Arizona and Sandra Faye Brasseaux of Ville Platte; eight grandchildren, Jamie Troy Huval, Chasity Fruge and Trudy Vuillemont, all of Eunice, Melissa Huval of New Roads, Coty Brown, Anthony Gaspard and Kristina Latour, all of Ville Platte, and Hailey Latour of Carencro; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Johnston; her father, John Gilbert Vidrine; her mother, Lemie LeBleu Saucier; one son, Clifton Huval Jr.; one sister, Alice “Lucy” King; and one granddaughter, Tina Brown.

Visitation will be held today, August 14, from 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. this evening.

Father Romero will officiate.
