Avoyelles COVID update for Thursday: 88 new cases, one additional death

Thursday's COVID-related statistics for Avoyelles Parish reflected almost 1,200 tests, almost 100 new cases and the parish's 140th pandemic fatality. For those grasping for anything resembling encouraging news in that report, the positive rate for the one-day snapshot was significantly lower than the previous day's.

The state health department reported that 1,181 COVID tests were reviewed since the Wednesday report. Of those, 1008 were lab tests with 43 positive results. There were only 173 rapid result tests in this group, but 45 of the new COVID cases were in that batch of tests. The overall positive rate in this report was 7.4 percent, but the rate for lab tests -- which is used to determine the parish's official weekly positive rate -- was 4.2 percent. The rapid results had a 26 percent positive rate.

Avoyelles' pandemic totals as of Thursday were 6,219 cases and 140 deaths. The statewide totals were 676,368 cases and 12,298 deaths.
