Avoyelles Wednesday COVID update: 140 cases, no deaths, 659 tests

With over twice the number of tests reviewed, it was no surprise that Avoyelles Parish had only a day to "enjoy" having only double-digit increases in its COVID cases. Wednesday's update from the state Health Department reported 140 new cases in its 659 tests reviewed for the parish. There were no additional deaths in the Wednesday report.

As noted before, the increase in tests resulted in a drop in the one-day positive rate, despite a jump in new cases that went from 86 on Tuesday to 140 on Wednesday. The Wednesday report's positive rate was 21.2 percent while Tuesday's was 37 percent.

From last Wednesday to today (Jan. 19 to Jan. 26), Avoyelles Parish had 587 new COVID cases out of 2,984 tests. That is a positive rate of almost 19.7 percent.

The parish’s official weekly positive rate, for the lab test results from Jan. 13-19, dropped to 19.3 percent. It was 22.2 percent for the seven-day period of Jan. 6-12.

As of Wednesday, Avoyelles’ 22-month pandemic totals were 9,976 infections and 185 deaths. Of those, 6,814 cases with 165 deaths were identified with molecular lab tests and 3,162 cases with 20 deaths were diagnosed using rapid result tests.

The state has added a new number to the running totals, showing that 644 of the parish’s COVID cases are “reinfections.”

The state pandemic totals on Wednesday were 1,145,245 infections and 15,523 deaths since March 2020.

Based on the one-day reports on Tuesday and Wednesday, it was almost certain that Avoyelles’ overall number of COVID cases would have topped 10,000 yesterday (Jan. 27).
