12th named storm of 2021 forms in Atlantic

Larry projected to become Cat 3 hurricane by Friday; poses no immediate threat to Gulf Coast

The 2021 hurricane season has its 12th named storm. Tropical Storm Larry, currently west of the Cabo Verde Islands, about halfway between west central Africa and northeast South America, became a named storm Wednesday. Larry is expected to become a Category 3 hurricane Friday and remain at that strength for several days as it travels over the open Atlantic.

It is still too early to predict Larry's path, but current projection indicate it will stay in the Atlantic, posing no threat to the Caribbean islands and Gulf states. It could strike Bermuda or even the U.S. northeast Atlantic coast.

The current forecast only goes to Sept. 8, with Larry still projected to be a Cat 3 major hurricane with sustained winds of 121 mph and gusts over 140 mph.

There is nothing in Larry's projected path to slow it down.
