APSO seeks info on after-prom shooting

One man wounded by unidentified shooter at private party

A 22-year-old man was wounded in the thigh when an unidentified man fired multiple shots at a private after-prom party early this past Sunday morning.

Avoyelles Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Steve Martel said investigators are still trying to determine who fired the shots and why.

The private party following a local high school’s prom was at 7611 La. Highway 115, outside of the Bunkie city limits.

Martel said deputies went to Bunkie General Hospital at 3 a.m. Sunday in response to a report of a gunshot victim. He said the man was shot in the thigh and had a non-life threatening wound.

All investigators have been able to learn from witnesses is an “unknown black male had fired an unknown number of rounds from a gun,” Martel said.

One bullet struck an occupied vehicle, but no one was injured, he said. One bullet hit the 22-year-old man.

It is not known how many shots were fired or if there were any other “near misses.”

The homeowner and party guests have been unable or unwilling to provide information on the shooter, Martel said.

It is also not known how many people were at the party when the shooting occurred. Martel said most of the party guests had left the scene by the time deputies arrived.

The matter is still under investigation and APSO is asking anyone with any information on the shooting to call 318-253-4000.
