Bunkie Fire Department hosts Bunkie Special Needs Sports and Fair event to be held May 22

The Bunkie Fire Department will sponsor the Central Louisiana Special Needs Sports and Fair on Sunday (May 22) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Haas Auditorium, located at 208 LA 29.
The event will feature free hamburgers and hot dogs, t-shirts, prizes and snacks for all participants.
Kendricks Johnson, who is working with the Bunkie Fire Department on the event, said he is glad to see the community come together in such a short period of time to bring this event to life.
Johnson hopes this is the first of many special needs fairs. “Every meeting was aggressive and progressive. If there was a task due it was completed ahead of time or on time,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to doing more with them.”
Bunkie Fire Chief Nick Ducote is hoping the fair will be a day of fun and education for all who attend.
“It will be a fun day for special needs kids in our parish to enjoy. We will also allow each child participant one sponsor to help them physically with the activities,” he said. “The department will also do a smoke detector course to teach the kids what a smoke detector sounds like and what a dead battery sounds like to help educate them on fire prevention.”
Activities held during the day will include softball, t-ball, basketball, and races.
Games will include cornhole, tug of war, sack races and more. There will also be a petting zoo.
Registration is free but participants have to fill out a form. Visit the Bunkie Fire Department Facebook page and download the Google form.
