Squealin’ good time is back in Mansura One day ‘Mini Fest’ Cochon de Lait Festival May 14

The Cochon de Lait Festival is back after a two year hiatus and it’s “getting back to its roots.”
The festival, typically held Mother’s Day weekend, will be held Saturday (May 14) in downtown Mansura.
Meyhan Chenevert, Mansura Chamber president, explained the festival committee wanted to regain the feel of the festivals from the 1950s-70’s.
“We want people to know we are back and want them to enjoy a homegrown festival,” she said. “It had gotten very large and we are returning to the one-day festivities with a focus on the contests and parade everyone has grown to love over the years,” she said. “The pig roasting and return to our roots are back and we are excited for people to enjoy.”
Though it may only be one day, this year’s festival is jammed packed with family fun.
Arts and crafts vendors set up will begin at 8 a.m.
The town parade will begin at 10 a.m. Cochon de lait dinners will be sold beginning at 10:30 a.m. Dinners are $10 each and include roast pork, jambalaya on the side with a roll.
At 11 a.m. DJ Ron Antoon will take the main stage to perform for the crowds.
At noon, the 2020 and 2021 Cochon de Lait Festival queens will be introduced.
Contests will start at 1 p.m. with the hog calling event. Ages 14 and under will compete on the main stage followed by ages 15 and over at 1:30 p.m. This contest is free to enter.
The beer drinking contest will follow hog calling. Contestants must be 21 years old to enter. The ladies will be first at 2 p.m. followed by men’s beer drinking at 2:30 p.m. For the ladies’ contest, participants will race to drink two beers as quickly as possible. In the men’s division, participants will open and drink three ice cold beers as quickly as possible to become champion. Entry is $5.
The boudin eating contest will start at 3 p.m. to see who can eat three links of boudin the fastest. Cost to enter the boudin eating contest is $10 per person.
The final contest of the day is the famed greasy pig contest held at the Mansura walking track.
Divisions from children to adult will pay for a chance to catch and take home a greased down, slippery pig. Cost to enter the contest is $5 per person.
Divisions will be ages 5 to 6; ages 7 to 8; ages 9 to 11; ages 12 to 14; ages 15 to 17; and the crowd favorite women-only division. There will be not be a men’s division. Two pigs will be released in each category.
