Paul Joseph (PJ) Blalock, Jr, 78, of Jackson passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018, at Garden View Assisted Living in Lafayette surrounded by his wife and sons. PJ was born in Bunkie and graduated from Menard High School in Alexandria in 1958. PJ graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1963 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. He received his Professional Engineering license, was employed by Dow Chemical Company in Plaquemine for 30 years, and later by Jacobs Engineering for 20 years. He was involved in Louisiana Engineering Society and was well known as a quality and safety specialist. PJ received numerous awards and accolades for his ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical issues and was frequently brought in as a consultant to analyze complex problems and deliver practical solutions.
PJ was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His many pursuits included a love for the outdoors, metal and wood working, dancing, photography, hunting and fishing, horticulture, traveling (including all 48 contiguous states, Canada and Mexico,) rebuilding antique cars, genealogy, eating Spam (a habit we could not fix), and he was especially proud of being one of the first and longest-lasting youth soccer coaches in the Baton Rouge area. PJ was a devout Catholic and his faith was very important to him. He believed in showing those close to him how he felt, rather than talking about it. He was always there whenever we needed him, for any problem, no matter how large or small. Well known as a generous man all of his life, since his oldest son is a physician, PJ wanted to help with the education of future physicians and donated his body to science.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Joseph Blalock, Sr. and Mildred Hutzler Blalock; brother, David Miller Blalock; his infant brother, Patrick Gerard Blalock; and his only sister, Mary Ann Blalock.
PJ is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Gertrude Bordelon Blalock; three sons, Dr. Andy (Callie) Blalock, Matthew (Andrea ) Blalock and Paul “Chip” Joseph (Kayla) Blalock, III; grandchildren, Elise Blalock, Alex Blalock, Colin Blalock and Shelby Blalock; brothers: John (Barbara) Blalock, Mike (Lou) Blalock, Jimmy ((Lisa) Blalock, Tommy (Marilyn) Blalock, Mark Blalock and Chuck (Tracy) Blalock; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to PJ’s memory can be sent to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnson Street, Lafayette, LA, and the Our Lady of Lourdes Foundation, 4801 Ambassador Caffery Parkway, Lafayette, LA.
The family truly appreciates the kindness and concern shown by the Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, Garden View Assisted Living and Hospice of Acadiana. The family also wishes to thank the countless friends and family that extended well wishes and visited PJ.
