1979 election ads bring back familiar Avoyelles names and faces

A page of election advertisements from the Oct. 23, 1979, edition of The Avoyelles Journal offers a glimpse into nearly five decades of local political history.

Before social media and digital campaigns, newspapers was the primary way candidates reached voters. Large black-and-white photographs, bold slogans and ballot numbers filled the pages as candidates shared their qualifications and campaign promises.

While Facebook and other digital platforms have changed political advertising, print newspapers remain an important part of election season in rural Avoyelles Parish.

These old advertisements preserve familiar names, faces and memories of past elections, reminders that while campaign methods have changed, some traditions remain.

Nearly 47 years later, candidates still turn to their hometown newspapers to reach the people they hope will elect them.
