Alphonse Funeral Fundraiser Arrangements

Alphonse Funeral Fundraiser Arrangements

Tuesday, October 28 • 6 p.m. • Broken Wheel Brewery, Marksville

Avoyelles Parish will gather to bid a fond and slightly suspicious farewell to one of its most colorful characters, Alphonse, the paper-bag-wearing commentator who has spent the past 50 years giving Avoyelles something to laugh about, argue over, and occasionally blush at.

Known for his sharp tongue, Cajun wit, and fearless approach to hounding politicians and “wannabe politicians,” Alphonse will be laid to rest in the only way fitting — a paper bag in a pirogue. Rumor has it the old worn paper bag of Alphonse might even be cremated in the Broken Wheel fireplace before the night is over.

The wake will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. at Broken Wheel Brewery in Marksville. In lieu of flowers, mourners are asked to donate a minimum of $10 to take a photo with Alphonse one last time. All proceeds will go to Building a Better Avoyelles (non-profit organization), supporting cultural and educational outreach across the parish.

If you are a former or current politician, or even an aspiring one, this is your chance to finally make peace with Alphonse. You’ll definitely want to take your picture with him, frame it alongside the article he once wrote about you, and proudly tell everyone that you outlived him.

Guests are encouraged to share a laugh, tell a tall tale, and toast to a true Avoyelles original. Broken Wheel’s locally brewed beer will be flowing throughout the evening — Alphonse’s favorite was the Pachafa, though he never turned down good company or a few Spring Bayou Blonds.

If you cannot make it in person, tune in to the live broadcast on 97.7 thecajun.com, streaming the event for friends and fans near and far.

Come celebrate the life, legend, and lasting humor of Alphonse. In Avoyelles, even a funeral can be a good time for a good cause.
