April Marks Child Abuse Awareness Month: Children’s Advocacy Network Urges Community to Speak Up and Take Action
AVOYELLES PARISH, La. — It’s a topic many avoid, but one local organization is making sure it is not ignored.
As April marks Child Abuse Awareness Month, the Children’s Advocacy Network is calling on the community to come together, speak up and take action to protect children across Avoyelles Parish and beyond.
For children who experience trauma, the effects can be long-lasting. Feelings of fear, shame and uncertainty can follow them for years, impacting their ability to see a hopeful future. The Children’s Advocacy Network works to change that by providing specialized care and support designed to help children heal.
Through trauma-focused therapy led by licensed mental health professionals, children and their families are given the tools they need to process what they have experienced and move forward. These services are rooted in proven, evidence-based approaches, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Alternative to Families Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT), which focus on helping children manage emotions, build resilience and restore a sense of safety.
Therapy takes place in a child-friendly environment, where both children and caregivers are supported in strengthening communication, improving coping skills and rebuilding confidence.
At the heart of the organization’s mission is a simple belief: every child deserves a safe and happy childhood.
Pinwheels for Prevention: A Community Call to Action
This April, the Children’s Advocacy Network is encouraging residents, businesses and organizations to participate in Pinwheels for Prevention, a nationwide campaign that raises awareness for child abuse prevention.
The pinwheel serves as a symbol of childhood innocence and a reminder that all children deserve a bright, healthy future.
Community members can show their support by hosting a pinwheel display at their home, business or public space. Options include outdoor “pinwheel gardens” or smaller indoor displays. The organization’s staff and volunteers will provide materials and handle installation for those who participate.
Education and Awareness Continue Year-Round
In addition to awareness efforts, the Children’s Advocacy Network is also focused on education and prevention. The organization recently hosted a Stewards of Children training in Avoyelles Parish, a program designed to teach participants how to recognize, prevent and respond responsibly to child sexual abuse.
Organizers say these types of trainings are critical in building a community that is informed, proactive and committed to protecting children.
The organization is also encouraging community members to consider becoming a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer. CASA volunteers are trained to advocate for children in the court system, ensuring their voices are heard and their best interests are represented.
Trainings are held throughout the year across the seven parishes served by the Children’s Advocacy Network. Those interested in becoming a volunteer can visit the organization’s website to apply and learn more about how they can make a direct impact in a child’s life.
