Avoyelles in 1927

Refuge, rescue and high water

The Great Flood of 1927 remains one of the most his-
toric natural disasters to affect Louisiana and the Mississippi River region. In Avoyelles Parish, families were

forced from their homes, bridges and rail lines became lifelines, and temporary refugee camps were set up as residents waited for the floodwater to recede.

These photographs show scenes from Bordelonville,
Simmesport, Mansura and Marksville, where communities
endured high water, displacement and recovery nearly a
century ago.
