The Bobby Jones and Mansura FFA chapters held a greenhand initiation and wiener roast.

Mrs. Bertha Lee Ferguson, a Baton Rouge home garden specialist, conducted a meeting for the garden leaders at the courthouse.

High school elections included Elton Broussard president of the Evergreen High 10th grade and Lolita Lemoine president of the Marksville Jr. High Homemakers Club.

Rev. Stafford Hebert resigned as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Marksville.

Marilyn Suddoth, daughter of Mrs. J.W. Suddoth of Bunkie, represented Bunkie as a princess in the International Rice Festival in Crowley.

The Grand Ole Opry under a big tent was coming to Bunkie sponsored by the Bunkie High senior class. Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys headlined the show.

Dr. Sylvan deNux was elected coroner of Avoyelles.

Miss Sarah Hinton was chosen to reign as queen of the Avoyelles Parish Fair.

Edgar Coco was selected as chairman of the newly formed Marksville Columbianism Association, which was connected to the Knights of Columbus.

Patricia Fontane of Hessmer and Herrin Ducote of Dupont each won a full paid trip to the American Royal Livestock show in Kansas City.

Joyce LaCombe was elected vice-president of the Cottonport High Home Economics Club; Kyrle Roy was chosen president of the Mansura FFA and Lee Brouillette was elected president of the Fifth Ward FFA Chapter.

Naval Aviation Cadet Ishmael S. Newberg of Marksville graduated from the U.S. Naval Pre-Flight School.

The combined deposits of the five parish banks totaled $11 million.

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bomar left Bunkie and moved to Alexandria after living there for many years and operating a Lincoln-Mercury dealership.

The Moreauville FFA elected Anthony Couvillion as president. P.J. Laborde was chosen as president of the Bordelonville High 4-H Club and Terry Brouillette became president of the Fifth Ward Student Council.

Deborah O’Bryan of Marksville was selected for membership in the Demonettes at Northwestern State College.

Joel Sylvan Williams and Kenneth Paul Bordelon both of Hessmer, received a $400 Federal Land Bank of New Orleans scholarship.

Marie Henrietta (Nettie) Chenevert of Bunkie was one of two students from Avoyelles Parish who were in the Northwestern State College Marching Band.

Gerald Dupont of Simmesport received the La. Land and Exploration scholarship.

Leroy Havard of Marksville received a bid from Kappa Sigma fraternity.

Bunkie High seniors Andy O’Brien and Douglas Bradley were chosen as semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

John Laborde, chairman of the proposed Brouillette waterworks, announced that a preliminary application had been made.

The Avoyelles Parish Police Jury hosted James Hays, executive director of the La. Police Jury Association.

Patrick and Marcella Quebedeaux were the winners of the parish 4-H Sweet Potato Contest.

Tom Roy and Peter Parrino, Bunkie businessmen, presented a program to the Rotary Club on the Avoyelles Chapter of Ducks Unlimited charter banquet to be held at the Avoyelles Country Club.

The Avoyelles Parish Retired Teachers Association requested equal treatment with working teachers.

Doris Marcotte of Bunkie qualified for the Commonwealth Life Insurance Company Go-Getter Club.

Lydia Devillier was elected president of the St. Joseph 4-H Club and at Lafargue High, Katen Dunlap became president of the Lafargue Teen Library Association.

Judge B.C. Bennett declared the appointment of Peter Lemoine as Cottonport city attorney was valid.

The old Bailey Hotel sign in Bunkie was being put to good use by city service groups posting their club’s meeting time.

Glynnis Dufour and Molly Laprarie of Bunkie received bids from LSU sororities. Glynnis’ was from Kappa Alpha Theta and Molly’s was from Kappa Delta.

Kim Lee was elected president of the Marksville High School FHA.

After voting booths were opened and results of the judge election made official, it was determined that Billy Bennett in the Division B race for District Judge picked up an additional 146 votes.

Bunkie High elected Cordell Guillory president of the student council.

Mrs. Oline Juneau celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends. She had 11 children, 39 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Celise Reech, daughter of Rodney and Sherry Reech of Bordelonville, had a poem selected to appear in the National Library of Poetry publication.

Re-elected officials in the parish included: Mansura town council-Julia Boston, Floyd Murray, Gaon Escude, Judy Bazert and Connie Ducote; Lionel Bordelon as mayor of Moreauville and school board, Van Kojis.

U.S. Congressman Bobby Jindal was the guest speaker at the Bunkie Lions Club meeting and discussed oil, Katrina, immigration and Louisiana’s future.

Avoyelles 4-H members were pictured as National 4-H Week was celebrated. Members were: Kaitlin Lucas, Nicky Mertens, Liddy Saucier, Gabe Vead, Lane Martin, Allison Roblin, Krista Bordelon, Morgan Mayeaux, and Kera Bordelon.
