Community Supports Mental Health at 2026 Into the Light 5K
The 2026 Into the Light 5K Run/Walk brought residents together September 19 at Marksville Courthouse Square for a day of remembrance, hope and support for suicide prevention and mental health awareness. Organized by Save Cenla, the event emphasized the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and creating communities where individuals feel comfortable seeking help. Activities began early, with more than 25 vendors sharing services and resources. The 5K race started at 8 a.m., with Chief Smith and his crew helping lead the event. Medals were awarded to race participants in several categories. Men's division winners included Jamie Ducote, Billy Clemons and Mathew Dixon, while women's division winners were Jennie Carver, Annemarie Dixon and Catie Dixon. Teen division winners included Ryder Doucet, Carson LeBorde, Jordan Lansberry, Kiley Barr and Eden Thomas. Younger participants Emily Ford and Addilyn Ford were also recognized. Sixteen volunteers carried combat boots in recognition of the daily loss of veterans to suicide. The display served as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support for military families. A remembrance ceremony began at 9 a.m. with a prayer, flag raising by Chief Ewing and Naomi Lamariniere, and the singing of the National Anthem. Loved ones shared memories honoring Javon, Stacy and Dr. Kuplesky, while guest speaker Kati Adams offered a personal testimony emphasizing hope, connection and the importance of choosing to stay. Throughout the morning, participants enjoyed music, line dancing, refreshments and family activities. Children enjoyed a fun jump, while music and entertainment added to the community atmosphere. The Bunkie Rotary Club provided refreshments, and volunteers from LaSAS helped create a welcoming atmosphere with bubbles and balloons.
Following the walk, participants gathered for a jambalaya lunch prepared and donated by Scott Fruge and his crew.
