Cottonport Park shut down over social-media threats; police arrest suspect on terrorizing

Sarah Williams Memorial Park was closed until further notice last week after Cottonport Police received social-media threats referencing the public space, town officials said.

The precautionary step paused all park activities while officers investigated and determined when it would be safe to reopen.

Mayor Terry Jeansonne emphasized that the move was temporary and centered on public safety.

“I completely understand your concern, and I want to assure you this decision wasn’t made lightly,” Jeansonne said. “The police received social media threats, and we felt it was best to close the park temporarily just to keep everyone safe — especially the kids who play there every day. We’ll reopen it as soon as we’re sure it’s safe, and we’ll keep everyone updated along the way.”

Investigation and Arrest

During the closure, Cottonport Police coordinated with partner agencies, and the town canceled Family Day, which had been scheduled for the weekend. Organizers of other park events notified participants of postponements or venue changes.

On Oct. 10, Cottonport Police announced an arrest in the case.

Keathon Washington (DOB 11/17/1992) was taken into custody without incident with assistance from the Louisiana Probation and Parole Division.

He was booked on a charge of terrorizing (La. R.S. 14:40.1) and transported to the Avoyelles Parish Jail, where he remained on a $100,000 bond and a probation and parole hold.

Chief Earnest Anderson praised the swift action of officers and partner agencies.

“We take any threat to our community seriously,” Anderson said. “The quick response and arrest in this case reflect our commitment to ensuring the safety of the citizens of Cottonport. We would like to thank the public and our law enforcement partners for their cooperation.”

Town leaders thanked residents for their patience, noting that public safety remained the top priority as the situation developed.

Officials said they would share reopening information through the town’s official channels once law enforcement clears the park.
