Embracing Serenity: Avoyelles Family's Joyful Backyard Flock

For local families, raising chickens and ducks has become a cherished daily ritual that brings peace, fresh food and plenty of smiles.
"We absolutely love having our chickens and ducks," says Scott Guillot, the homeowner, who shares their acreage with a lively mixed flock. While the fresh eggs are a delicious bonus, often gathered warm from the nest boxes each morning, the real magic happens when the birds are out free-roaming the yard.
Watching the flock wander across the grass, pecking at bugs and greenery, is a delight in itself. The ducks quack contentedly while the chickens cluck and bawck away, sounding for all the world like they're engaged in deep, animated conversations. "It's so entertaining," Scott notes. "They seem to have their own little society going on out there."
Collecting the eggs has turned into a peaceful family activity, with everyone joining in to check nests and marvel at the variety of colors and sizes. But beyond the practical rewards, the presence of the birds brings a profound sense of calm.
"When the chickens and ducks are out free-roaming the acreage, we're all at peace," the family explains. "It's incredibly calming and therapeutic for every one of us. It feels like going back to a simpler time, just nature, fresh air, and the gentle sounds of happy poultry."
In a busy world, this small homestead haven offers a gentle reminder of life's quieter pleasures. The flock doesn't just provide eggs; it provides moments of connection, mindfulness, and pure joy.
