Exciting 4-H Events Coming Up in Avoyelles Parish!

Avoyelles Parish 4-H members have several upcoming opportunities to learn new skills, meet friends and participate in hands-on activities this spring and summer.

The first event is the Avoyelles 4-H Spring Workshop, scheduled for April 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Avoyelles 4-H Office, 8592 Hwy. 1 in Mansura. The workshop is open to all registered 4-H members and will feature sessions in:

  • Floral design
  • Art
  • Fashion
  • Wetlands education
  • Culinary activities
  • STEM projects

The cost is $25 per child, and registration must be completed by April 1 through the 4-H Online system at v2.4honline.com.

Later in the month, Avoyelles 4-H will host a Movie Night on April 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Avoyelles 4-H Office. The outdoor event will feature a movie and snacks for participants. The cost is $10 per child, and the event is open to all registered 4-H members. Participants are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket for the outdoor showing. Registration is required by April 15 through the 4-H Online events page.

Young cooks can also take part in 4-H Sushi Night, scheduled for April 20 from 4 to 6 p.m., also at the Avoyelles 4-H Office. The hands-on workshop is open to registered 4-H members in grades 4 through 12 and will include lessons in:

  • MyPlate nutrition
  • Food safety
  • Knife skills

Participants will prepare several sushi varieties including:

  • California roll
  • Spicy shrimp roll
  • Dessert roll

Participation is limited to 20 students, and the cost is $25 per participant. The registration deadline is April 13.

Looking ahead to summer, Avoyelles Parish 4-H members in grades 4-6 are invited to attend 4-H summer camp June 8 through June 11 at the Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center in Pollock. The camp offers youth the opportunity to explore new interests, build confidence and form lasting friendships while participating in educational tracks such as:

  • Science
  • Engineering
  • Technology
  • Outdoor adventures
  • Gardening
  • Louisiana wetlands
  • General arts
  • Food and fitness
  • Water safety

In addition to classes, campers will enjoy activities including:

  • Swimming
  • Canoeing
  • Kayaking
  • Archery
  • Outdoor sports
  • Art activities
  • Line dancing

along with evening programs such as a talent show, awards ceremony, social activities and nightly Vespers.

Camp spots are limited, and families are encouraged to watch for registration information and contact their local 4-H agent for details.
