Louisiana residents now have a new way to explore the outdoors at no cost thanks to an expanded partnership between the State Library of Louisiana and Louisiana State Parks.

Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser announced that the “Check Out Louisiana” program has officially expanded to include all public library systems across the state allowing library cardholders in all 64 parishes to check out free day passes to Louisiana’s state parks and historic sites

The program which first launched in October 2024 with 19 participating library systems has now grown to include all 68 public library systems statewide

Through the program patrons can visit any of Louisiana’s 21 state parks and 14 historic sites by simply checking out a pass from their local library Passes are available on a first-come first-served basis while supplies last

Officials say the expansion comes at a fitting time as 2026 has been designated the “Year of Outdoors” in Louisiana an initiative aimed at encouraging residents and visitors to experience the state’s natural beauty and outdoor recreation

“We’re proud to expand this program to every corner of Louisiana,” Nungesser said “This gives citizens the opportunity to discover our state parks and historic sites at no cost by simply using a library card”

In addition to day passes some locations also offer “Geaux Explore” backpacks which can be checked out to enhance the experience The backpacks include items such as binoculars a compass magnifying glass wildlife and plant field guides and educational materials promoting responsible outdoor practices

State Librarian Meg Placke said the program highlights how libraries continue to serve as gateways to more than just books

“In Louisiana your library card unlocks more than just the outstanding resources of your local library” Placke said “It becomes a passport that connects you with our state’s history culture and outdoor life”

For residents in Avoyelles Parish and surrounding rural communities the program offers an affordable way for families to enjoy day trips outdoor recreation and educational experiences close to home

Officials hope the expanded access will encourage more people to visit Louisiana’s parks and historic sites for the first time and develop a deeper appreciation for the state’s natural resources
