A look back at the Sunday, June 16, 1985, edition of The Bunkie Record shows that even 41 years ago, children were facing the same yearly question: What do you get Dad for Father’s Day?
At the bottom of the front page, the newspaper featured a lighthearted Father’s Day piece titled “Father’s Day gift hard for kids to select.” Several local children were photographed and asked what they planned to give their fathers for the holiday.
Their answers ranged from practical to funny and heartfelt. Some children were still undecided, while others had already thought of clothes, a shirt, a shower massage or even a hunting knife. One child said it was hard to decide because she had not made up her mind yet, while another joked that he might get his father a “buck knife.”
The feature captured a simple moment in time, showing children thinking about their fathers in their own honest words. It was the kind of small-town newspaper piece that preserved everyday voices, family ties and community life in Avoyelles Parish.
Published on Father’s Day in 1985, the page serves as a reminder that while the years change, the challenge of finding the perfect gift for Dad never really goes away.
