Final Buzzer: Local Basketball Teams Wrap Up Memorable Seasons!
Mustangs capture back to back district titles, finish season in playoffs
The Avoyelles High School Mustangs boys basketball team wrapped up another impressive season Monday, March 2, falling to French Settlement 63 to 46 on the road in the second round of the LHSAA Division III Non Select playoffs.
Despite the postseason loss, the Mustangs once again proved the strength of their program by capturing the District 5 2A Championship for the second straight year. The team battled through a competitive schedule and advanced into the second round of the playoffs, continuing a stretch of success that has brought pride to the Avoyelles community.
The season also highlighted the leadership of head coach Chris Dupuy, who guided the varsity program without an assistant coach. Under his direction, the Mustangs maintained a disciplined and competitive approach that carried the team through another district championship season and a strong playoff run.
Following the season, Dupuy reflected on the accomplishments of the team and the historic success of the program.
“After taking some time to gather my thoughts about the past season, let me say I am truly grateful to have coached these young men this season,” Dupuy said. “For the first time in school history, the Avoyelles Mustangs boys basketball team won back to back district titles, and our boys are the only team in school history to go undefeated in district two years in a row.”
Dupuy also praised the senior class for its role in the program’s continued growth and success.
“I must congratulate our senior class for being the most successful in the history of our school,” he said. “Avoyelles High won its first district title in 1997 under Coach Brent Whiddon and won its first playoff game by defeating Evangel. Now our seniors have been part of two district titles.”
The coach noted the group’s impact on postseason success as well.
“In more than 30 years of Avoyelles boys basketball, the team has won nine total playoff games, and this group of seniors has been part of five of those wins,” Dupuy said.
While the season ended earlier than the team hoped, Dupuy said the program is positioned well for the future.
“The season may not have ended the way we wanted, but our foundation is here and we are looking forward to the future,” he said. “Now it is time to keep building and make next year’s seniors the most decorated basketball class in Mustang history.”
Players and coaches alike represented Avoyelles High School with determination, teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the year, reinforcing a program built on effort, accountability and pride.
Eagles close season with regional playoff appearance
The St. Joseph Eagles boys basketball team wrapped up a strong season after earning a spot in the regional playoffs, capping off a year defined by determination, growth and teamwork.
Throughout the season, the Eagles battled through challenges and continued to improve on the court, representing St. Joseph Elementary and High School with grit, sportsmanship and unity. Their postseason appearance reflects the hard work and commitment shown by the players all year long.
The program also recognized senior Dreylin Hairford for his dedication and leadership during his time with the Eagles. Coaches and teammates praised his contributions to the team and the example he set for younger players.
The school also extended appreciation to the Eagles’ coaching staff, including Head Coach Loretta Seaberry and Assistant Coaches Guy Lemoine and Colton Dupuis, for their leadership and commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court.
St. Joseph officials say they are proud of the team’s accomplishments this season and look forward to building on the momentum in the years ahead.
