🕰️ 90 Years Ago — From our Nov. 2, 1935 edition
- C.C. Mayeux announced his candidacy for re-election as school board member for Ward 7.
- Pvt. Charles W. Mayeux, formerly of Plaucheville, was transferred to the U.S. Marine Barracks, Navy Operating Base, Norfolk, Va.
- Mr. Murphy L. Lacour of Simmesport entered the race for state legislator.
- Sam Moreau formally announced his candidacy for the election of district attorney.
- The remodeled Joffrion Building, on Mark Street by the courthouse square in Marksville, was completed.
🕰️ 80 Years Ago — From our Nov. 1945 edition
- Willard the Wizard, one of the world’s greatest magicians, performed in Bunkie.
- John Peter Laborde was promoted to captain in the U.S. Army.
- Miss Fern Johnson presented the show, “Pep Parade,” at the Marksville High School auditorium. The show was sponsored by the senior class.
- Lt. Van L. Roy of Marksville received congratulations from Major General Withers A. Buress for receiving the Century Division title for both the pound shot and discus throw.
- Mrs. Armaide Guillot of Echo died in the Alexandria Hospital.
🕰️ 70 Years Ago — From our Nov. 5, 1955 edition
- William Yarno sought re-election for state representative.
- Fred Preaus, a candidate for governor in the Democratic Primary, was scheduled to speak in Avoyelles.
- Dr. T. R. (Tido) Roy announced his candidacy for state representative by issuing the statement, “It’s time for a farmer.”
- The Southern Bell Telephone Company made plans for an extension of telephone exchanges in Avoyelles Parish.
- P.P. McNeely, president of the Marksville High Quarterback Club, announced arrangements for the homecoming celebration in Marksville.
🕰️ 60 Years Ago — From our Nov. 4, 1965 edition
- Gulfco Investment Group, Inc. of Marksville announced the appointment of Robert Eddy as comptroller. (Editor’s note: He still is with Gulfco as of 2025)
- An explanation plan of the Knights of Columbus was formulated for the Moreauville and Simmesport area.
- Mr. Ralph Tassin, Mrs. Nellie Sayes and Mr. Gene Edwards were honored for their presentation to the school board — discussing roles and training of citizenship in the community.
- Thomas Ballard of Marksville toured the Springhill International Paper Plant in Magnolia, Arkansas.
- Mrs. Nora F. Gauthier presided over the Avoyelles Retired Teachers Association at its annual luncheon.
- Sidney J. Neck of Mansura was appointed to the National Membership and Post Activities Committee of the American Legion.
🕰️ 50 Years Ago — From our Nov. 6, 1975 edition
- F.O. “Potch” Didier, Jr., Raymond J. Laborde and Mrs. Douglas P. Moreau, Sr. were re-elected to the respective posts of sheriff, state representative and assessor.
- Crawford Quinn’s home was in the “Tour of Homes.”
- The Marksville town council and Mayor Andre Coco unanimously approved the request by the Jaycees to sponsor a street fair.
- The Avoyelles Parish Farm Bureau chose David L. Brunson of Bunkie as Avoyelles Outstanding Young Farmer for 1975.
- Albin M. Lemoine was appointed teacher at the Adult-Career Learning Center in Marksville.
🕰️ 40 Years Ago — From our Nov. 7, 1985 edition
- District Judge James N. Lee announced his retirement plans.
- The police jury and the Louisiana Farm Bureau Association sought a presidential disaster proclamation.
- The Farmers Home Administration issued new regulations spelling out loan servicing alternatives to farmers with economic difficulty.
- John Conlee was scheduled to present two concerts at the Marksville High School auditorium.
🕰️ 30 Years Ago — From our Nov. 2, 1995 edition
- Keila Whittington, a Marksville native and former Lady Tiger Basketball standout, was named assistant coach of the Indiana University women’s basketball team.
- Danika Benjamin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Felix Benjamin, was crowned Miss Avoyelles High for 1995.
- Avoyelles Judge Harold Brouillette and Ward Judges Angelo Piazza and James Mixon attended a seminar at Louisiana College.
🕰️ 20 Years Ago — From our Nov. 3, 2005 edition
- Sherri Lee Davis and Amber Lynn Williams, inmates at Avoyelles Women’s Correctional Facility in Cottonport, were charged with theft of public money by posing as hurricane victims to receive FEMA funds.
- Avoyelles Hospital in Marksville, part of the Rapides Healthcare System, may be sold to Associates Healthcare Systems in Tennessee. Hospital CEO David Mitchel said he knew nothing but what he read on the internet.
- The Bunkie Panthers and the Marksville Tigers were preparing to play the annual Catskin game in Bunkie.
- Ladies attending Pink October were: Mary Ann Carmouche, Janette Villemarette, Lisa Barbry, Janice Lopez, Debbie Kaylo and Gina Bertalotto.
- The Marksville Tigers won their second straight district title by defeating Buckeye.
- The Town of Cottonport could begin zoning property if the town council votes in favor. Mayor Paul Gauthier said zoning should have passed in 1976 when it was first drawn up.
🕰️ 10 Years Ago — From our Nov. 5, 2015 edition
- Avoyelles public schools ranked 63 out of 75 on Common Core tests — a four-spot drop from the previous year.
- Bunkie City Judge Digger Earles ordered Police Chief Bobby Corner to appear in court and explain why he disregarded a warrant-service order.
- Arthur Luneford, 42, an employee of Progressive Waste Solutions, was struck and killed on N. Main St. in Marksville while collecting trash.
- Despite rainy Halloween weather, the fun continued with costumed participants: Michelle Dupuy, Cheyenne Bourque, Mollie Bourque, Austin Bourque, Destiny Dauzat, Jacob Dauzat and Tyler Couvillion.
