Louisiana Releases Draft for P.E. Standards

The Louisiana Department of Education has released draft revisions to the state’s K–12 physical education standards and is inviting public feedback through April 15.

Residents, educators and other stakeholders can review the proposed changes and submit comments until 4 p.m. as part of the state’s effort to strengthen the role of physical fitness in promoting student health and success.

“Physical education should help foster a lifelong commitment to movement, play and healthy activities,” said Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley. “We appreciate the thoughtful work of the review committee and invite the public to share feedback as we move forward.”

The review began in fall 2025 as part of Louisiana’s regular seven-year standards review cycle required under Board of Elementary and Secondary Education policy. The current physical education standards were last adopted in 2017.

More than 140 individuals applied to participate in the review process. From that group, 25 educators and stakeholders were selected to serve on workgroups, with 11 members also serving on a steering committee overseeing the effort.

Committee members include classroom teachers, health professionals, higher education faculty and other education stakeholders from across the state. The group collaborated to draft updated standards designed to strengthen physical education instruction and encourage lifelong physical activity among students.

The proposed revisions focus on:

  • Strengthening foundational movement skills across grade levels
  • Ensuring developmentally appropriate motor skill development
  • Supporting high-quality instruction for all learners
  • Integrating movement-based standards that promote physical fitness outcomes

Comments gathered during the public review period will be presented to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. If approved, the updated standards would be implemented statewide beginning with the 2027–2028 school year following educator training during the 2026–2027 school year.

Residents can review the draft standards and submit feedback online through the Louisiana Department of Education.
