Louisiana Anti-Fraud Law adopted as National Model

The National Council of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) has officially adopted Louisiana’s amended insurance fraud law as its new national benchmark, an action that positions Louisiana as a national leader in the fight against insurance fraud.

According to the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud, insurance fraud costs American families up to $308.6 billion annually, equating to nearly $1,000 in higher premiums per household.

Sponsored by Rep. Gabe Firment, the new NCOIL amendment closes loopholes and gives states stronger tools to hold scammers accountable.

“Insurance fraud is a widespread problem that harms both policyholders and insurers,” said Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple. “The adoption of Louisiana’s fraud law as the NCOIL national benchmark is a testament to our state’s commitment to protecting consumers and strengthening our insurance market. The Louisiana Department of Insurance applauds the efforts of Rep. Firment and NCOIL in passing this important model law.”

The new NCOIL Insurance Fraud Model Act is based on Louisiana bills authored by Sen. Adam Bass and Rep. Jacob Braud. The Model Act provides strengthened consumer protection and provisions that give prosecutors and law enforcement agencies more flexibility in how to utilize their resources to bring scammers to justice.

“I was proud to sponsor this important amendment at NCOIL,” said Rep. Firment. “This amendment gives states a stronger, clearer tool to hold bad actors accountable, especially those who prey on homeowners after storms. It’s time to stop the scammers who are preventing premium relief for hardworking families.”
