Louisiana's New Office for Rural Health Care: A Game Changer!

Governor Jeff Landry has signed an executive order creating the Office of Rural Health Transformation and Sustainability within the Louisiana Department of Health, aiming to strengthen access to care for rural communities across the state.

The move also establishes the Rural Health Transformation Program Advisory Council, which will help guide implementation and ensure efforts align with statewide priorities while addressing the specific needs of local communities.

The new office will oversee Louisiana’s Rural Health Transformation Program, supported by more than $208 million in federal funding. State officials say the award is among the highest in the nation and could allow Louisiana to draw down more than $1 billion over the next five years.

“This executive order reflects our commitment to improving health outcomes for Louisiana families, no matter where they live,” Landry said. “For too long, rural communities have faced barriers to accessing care. Today, we are taking action to strengthen those systems so that every Louisianan has access to high quality care close to home.”

Nearly 1.1 million residents live in rural parishes across Louisiana, where access to care is often limited and rates of chronic disease are higher. Health officials say workforce shortages and long travel distances for treatment have created ongoing challenges.

LDH Secretary Bruce Greenstein called the initiative a “historic opportunity” to improve how care is delivered in rural areas, emphasizing efforts to expand access while building a more coordinated and sustainable system.

Louisiana Surgeon General Dr. Evelyn Griffin said the goal is to ensure rural residents receive the same level of care as those in larger cities, making quality health care more accessible locally.

The new office will focus on: - expanding the rural health care workforce - improving technology - supporting innovative care delivery models - strengthening coordination among providers

Officials say the effort is designed to improve outcomes in areas such as chronic disease, maternal health, behavioral health services and early detection of serious illnesses.

The initiative is expected to impact rural parishes across Louisiana, including areas like Avoyelles Parish, as the state works to expand access to care and strengthen local health systems.

State leaders say the initiative represents a long term investment in improving health care access and outcomes for rural Louisiana residents.
