Multi-Vehicle Crash in Moreauville Linked to Cane-Field Smoke in Avoyelles Parish

Moreauville, La. – A chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles occurred yesterday afternoon on a highway near Moreauville in Avoyelles Parish after heavy smoke generated by a burning sugar-cane field obscured visibility on the roadway.

According to a report by KALB News, the smoke from the cane-field fire drifted across the highway, creating dangerously low visibility and leading to the multi-vehicle collision, which reportedly involved a law-enforcement vehicle as well.

No official fatality count has yet been released; the story remains under investigation by the Louisiana State Police. The station reported the crash was under investigation, and that the exact number of vehicles involved and the full extent of injuries remains undetermined.

Authorities have not yet identified the party responsible for the cane-field burning or determined if any violations occurred. Local residents say that cane-burning is a routine part of sugar-cane field preparation; however, when smoke drifts onto highways it can pose serious risks to motorists.
