Cottonport 6th grade class hit with COVID case

All students and the teacher in a 6th grade class at Cottonport Elementary are on voluntary quarantine after a classmate tested positive for COVID-19, Avoyelles Parish Superintendent Thelma Prater said.

Prater said a letter was sent home to all parents of children in that class, notifying them that a case of COVID had been identified. Usually when this has occurred this year, all parents are notified of a case in their child's classroom and those whose children sit near the infected child are advised to quarantine the student for eight school days. In this case, it was not immediately clear which students may have come into close contact with the infected child.

Prater said parents may send their child back to school if they test negative for COVID or they may keep them out the full eight days of quarantine.

Students will either handle their assignments virtually or the school could send home work packets to be finished and returned to be graded.

The last day of school for students is May 28. The last day for teachers is May 31.
