Memorial Day events set in Avoyelles

Memorial Day, a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to their country, will be commemorated nationwide Monday, May 27.
In Avoyelles, ceremonies will be held this Saturday, May 25 and Monday, May 27.
Below are the scheduled events:
Saturday, May 25-
9 a.m.- Fifth Ward Veterans Monument
Fifth Ward/Moncla Council Knights of Columbus 9418 is remembering all men and women who died while serving in the military with a Memorial Day Observance event on Saturday, May 25 beginning at 9 a.m. The event will take place at the Fifth Ward Veterans Memorial located at the Kramer walking trail, 1924 Hwy 1 (Fifth Ward) Marksville.
The program, “Honored to Remember,” is scheduled to have the Cenla Honor Guard to Post the colors with the presence of Monsignor Van der Putten Council 2333. Airman First Class Naomi Lamartiniere, American Legion Post #130 Commander, will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Father Ken Obiekwe, Pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, will deliver the invocation followed by event guest speakers Rylee Schexnyder, Patriotism Essay award winner, and Graham Kramer, president of Kramer Funeral Home.
Pastor Keith Lamartiniere, of Fifth Ward Baptist Church, will offer a closing prayer followed by playing of taps by the Cenla Honor Guard.
The family of the late John Wayne Guillot will present the Veterans Memorial wreath honoring deceased veterans.
Refreshments will be served by Our Lady of Lourdes Altar Society.

Monday, May 27
9 a.m.-St. Joseph cemetery No. 1
The Catholic Daughters will host a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday at 9 a.m. The ceremony will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery No. 1 on Waddil Street behind St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marksville. Flags will be placed at the graves of those who died in service to their country, weather permitting.
The public is invited to attend.

10 a.m.- Paragon Casino Resort Marksville
Paragon Casino Resort is excited to announce the entertainment lineup for Memorial Day Weekend with something fun for everyone. Guests can anticipate a weekend full of comedy and concerts with tickets on sale now.
Leroy Thomas and the Zydeco Roadrunners will kick off the weekend on Saturday, May 25 exclusively for Paragon RV Resort guests only. Also known as “The Jewel of the Bayou,” Leroy Thomas mixes a repertoire of Zydeco, Cajun, Blues, R&B and Country music into a sound uniquely his own. RV Resort guests can get ready to dance the night away to feet-stomping good music from Leroy’s accordion. There is no admission fee for RV Resort guests. The band kicks off at 6 p.m. and will play until 9 p.m. under the Big Tent at Paragon RV Resort.
Comedy Jam is a dinner and show happening in the Mari Showroom on Saturday, May 25.
Hosted by Comedian GrossMann, Comedy Jam was originally seen on BET’s Comic View and will feature sets by JJ Williamson and Blame the Comic. Guests can expect gut-busting laughter while enjoying delicious dining by Paragon Casino Resort. Tickets are now on sale, and going fast, on Paragon’s website, starting at $50. Ticket prices include the cost of a buffet dinner and two drinks. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. on May 25 and the show starts at 7 p.m.
The Chee-Weez will then take the Mari Showroom stage on Sunday, May 26. A New Orleans band known for their video walls, lasers and hilarious 80’s-themed antics,The Chee-Weez bring nonstop fun to their version of classic rock and the oldies. Guests can be prepared to sing and dance the night away on the Mari Showroom dance floor.
Tickets for The Chee-Weez concert are now on sale, starting at $15 for general admission and $20 for a limited number of table seats. Doors open at 7 p.m. on May 26 and the concert starts at
8 p.m.
Rounding out the weekend, Paragon Casino Resort will host a special Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 27. Active Duty, veterans, civilians, first responders and the local community are invited to view the ceremony and pay their respects to those who died in defense of the United States. Visitors can join the ceremony on May 27 at 10 a.m. in the Grand Hall with refreshments to follow.
On Memorial Day, May 27, veterans, active military and first responders are invited to enjoy a complimentary breakfast at Market Place Buffet from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
To participate in the offer, qualified guests can visit Club Paragon and present their ID and credentials to receive a voucher valid for one free breakfast buffet at Market Place Buffet.
