Charles "Gene" Eugene Britton, longtime Bunkie coach

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles "Gene" Eugene Britton, beloved coach, devoted father, and proud patriot. Gene, born on July 27, 1934, left this world on November 16, 2023. He was 89 years old.
A Memorial Service to honor Charles Eugene Britton will be held on Monday, November 27, 2023 at 6:00 pm in the chapel if Melancon Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Tingle officiating. There will be a private burial in Pythian Cemetery, Bunkie.
The family has requested that a celebration of his life be held at Melancon Funeral Home on Monday, November 27, 2023 from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
Gene was preceded in death by his loving wife, Bettye Joyce Tate Britton, his mother Minnie Belle Fuller Britton, his father William Arthur Britton, and his brother James Fredrick Britton. Though gone, his memory lives on through his surviving children Leah Elizabeth Britton Krauss (Mark), Jeb Stuart Britton (LouAnn), William Brian Britton (Kreisha), and Jane Anne Britton Wilkinson (Joseph). His legacy extends to his grandchildren: Hannah Britton (Luke), William Britton, Andrew Britton, Sophia Britton, Grace Britton, Jordan Richards, Zachariah Richards, Michael Krauss, Stephanie Thies, Anna Thies, and the late Page Krauss. Additionally, he is survived by great-grandchildren Emmet
Mobley, Olive Young, Eliza Elliott, and Emily Hare.
Gene proudly served his country in the United States Army before pursuing higher education at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. During his time at McNeese State College, he made significant contributions to the McNeese football team. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and later earned his master’s degree in Secondary Education from Auburn University along with a +30 from LSUA. Following his academic achievements, Gene dedicated himself to a fulfilling career in education and coaching. His passion for guiding and inspiring others left an indelible mark on the countless lives he touched.
His commitment to mentorship and leadership extended beyond the field, as evidenced by his service as a member of the Avoyelles Parish Police Jury and his election as Avoyelles Parish Police Jury President. Additionally, he was appointed to the Red River Waterway Commission by the Governor of Louisiana. In his leisure, Gene found solace in the great outdoors. He loved to hunt, fish, and sail, finding peace and joy in the beauty of nature. These passions reflected the adventurous spirit that defined his life.
Charles Eugene Britton will be fondly remembered as a man of honor, resilience, and unwavering dedication. In this time of mourning, let us
celebrate his life, his achievements, and the love he shared with family and friends.
Coach will forever be remembered, and deeply missed.
