Elizabeth Smith, 60, Bunkie

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 30, 2021, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with the Rev. Stephen Scott Chemino, V.G. officiating. Interment will follow in the Gate of Heaven Mausoleum in Bunkie. Arrangements are under the direction of Hixson-Ducote Funeral Home.

Ann, as she was known to her family and friends, age 60 of Bunkie, passed away peacefully in the arms of her beloved husband Billy and with her devoted family at her side on Monday, April 26 at Cedar Crest Memory Care in Lafayette.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Clifton and Eline Redmon, and her in-laws, William “Bill” and Julie Smith.

Having survived invasive breast cancer in 2004 and then finally succumbing to an eight-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, she leaves her survivors, for whom she most deeply loved and cared: William “Billy” Smith, her much-loved husband of 42 years; her son Jeremy and his wife Lauren of Arnaudville; her daughter Olivia Sabottke and her husband Craig of Baton Rouge; her grandchildren, Davis Daniel Smith, Carter William Smith, Finn Murphy Smith, Julia Catherine Sabottke, and Smith Frederick Sabottke; her sister Marilyn Doucet and her husband Michael of Lafayette; and her sister-in-law Sheila LaBorde and her husband Donald of Lafayette. Precious, wonderful memories of Ann will live with them long after her passing.

Ann was a devoted Catholic and a joyful, fun-loving woman whose greatest pleasure was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and other family. She particularly enjoyed visiting Connie and Buddy Redmon, Angela and Todd Cullen, and Patricia and Knocker Newton, her and her husband’s lifelong friends. She loved dancing with Billy, her high school sweetheart who became her devoted husband, to the music of Sade and any song with a saxophone. She relished shopping trips with her sister Marilyn and her niece Brandy Brewer, especially when they found a great sale on cute clothes. Another of her favorite delights was being in her yard—watching and feeding her hummingbirds and caring for her beautiful flowers. With her wisdom and fiery spirit, she was the wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend that everyone would be blessed to have.

Many Avoyelleans will remember Ann as the owner of Redmon’s Flooring, where she used her amazing gift of style to assist many a homeowner in selecting just the right floor, which her husband Billy installed. They were a dynamic team, completely devoted to one another as they served their many customers.

Her pallbearers will be Blake Brewer, Garrett Brewer, Craig Sabottke, Todd Cullen, Jason Redmon, and Buddy Redmon. Her honorary pallbearers will be Michael Doucet, Paul “Knocker” Newton, and Justin Doucet.

Friends and family may visit on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at Hixson-Ducote Funeral Home of Bunkie. A rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Following her interment, lunch for her family and friends will be served at Evergreen Bed and Breakfast, compliments of Greg Kojis.
