Laura Mayeux Gremillion

Laura Mayeux Gremillion

“Life is Beautiful” – if you knew our mother, Laura Gremillion, you knew this saying. She was always positive, happy, smiling, singing, and was truly a beautiful soul. She was born on April 18, 1927, to Harris F. and Mary Dupuy Mayeux, and entered into eternal rest at The Crossing at Clarity Hospice in Baton Rouge, LA on April 19, 2023, one day after her 96th birthday.

She was born in Marksville where she resided for a majority of her life.

Viewing will be held Monday, April 24, 2023, from 9:00AM to 1:00PM at Hixon Brothers Funeral Home in Marksville, LA. Rosary will be recited at 11:00 AM. The funeral mass will be held at 1:30 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marksville, LA. Burial to follow at St. Joseph Mausoleum #2.

After graduating from Marksville High School in 1944, she immediately went to work asa secretary at Camp Claiborne during WW II.

She was the last surviving member of her graduating class which included many distinguished students and friends. She met and married Raymond M. Gremillion of Evergreen and reared five sons and one daughter.

Mom believed in keeping busy. She was a ceramic teacher and opened “Laura’s Ceramicand Craft Shop” where she taught many children and adults who to this day remember her. She often visited schools and nursing homes where she also taught.

She was a favorite with the clients of Avoyelles Society for the Developmentally Disabled/SilverLining Pie Company and loved her “beautiful children”. Her ceramic pieces are still treasured by many.

Her many club activities included: Marksville Homemaker’s Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Marksville Chamber of Commerce, St. Joseph Catholic Daughters of America, St. Joseph Choir, Marksville Garden Club, Avoyelles Arts and Humanities, and La Commission des Avoyelles and Friends of Fort de Russy Organization. In 2009, she was honored to be a court member of the 200th Marksville Bicentennial celebration. She also volunteered as a longtime instructor for St. Joseph’s CCD program and many otherprograms throughout the community.

She is remembered for her outstanding performance as a district manager and salesperson for the World Book Encyclopedia. She was a resident of Oakmont Estate Assisted Living facility for the last 4½ years. While there, she encouraged and uplifted all residents and employees with her vibrant and positive attitude. She was a blessing to all! She loved working with children and adults alike, and her goal was to always serve as arole model for her family, friends, and numerous acquaintances.

This goal she surely accomplished! She often said God blessed her with a beautiful family, however, she never knew that knowing her was the true blessing.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Raymond M. Gremillion; parents Harris F. and Mary Dupuy Mayeux; siblings Hudson J. “Lut” Mayeux, Herman “Tee-ta” Mayeux, Grace “Toon” Panichella, and Beverly “Tu-tu” Couvillon; great grandsons Ross M. Blair and Bentley J. Gremillion

She is survived by her five sons: Ronald (Ida) Gremillion, of Zachary; Kenneth (Elaine) Gremillion, of Marksville; John (Rhonda) Gremillion, of Walker; Raymond M., Jr. ( Donna) Gremillion, of Zachary; and Glenn (Peggy) Gremillion, of Fifth Ward; and one daughter, Patricia (Timothy) Dupuy of Zachary; 18 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.

The five sons Ronald, Kenneth, John, Raymond Jr., Glenn, and son-in-law Timothy will carry their beloved mother and mother-in-law to her final resting place. A special thanks to the administration and staff of Oakmont Estate for the compassionate care and love extended to our mother during her residency.
