Obituary for Rev. Msgr. Allen Joseph Roy, Jr.
Rev. Msgr. Allen Joseph Roy, Jr.

“Well done, My good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come and share your master’s joy.” — Matthew 25:23

On August 28, 1929, God gave this world a precious gift with the birth of Reverend Monsignor Allen Joseph Roy, Jr.

On September 5, 2025, at the age of 96, God called him home.

Msgr. Roy was the first of four sons born to Allen J. Roy, Sr. and Lucille Plauche Roy of Hamburg. As a young child, his family moved to and settled in New Roads, where he attended St. Joseph Academy and first felt the call to serve as a Roman Catholic priest.

He went on to study at St. Joseph Seminary College in St. Benedict and Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 5, 1954, at St. Louis Cathedral.

A Lifetime of Ministry and Service

Msgr. Roy faithfully served in multiple parishes throughout Louisiana:

  • Assistant Pastor at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in New Orleans
  • Assistant Pastor at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in New Orleans
  • Pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Violet, where he organized and provided relief for victims of Hurricane Betsy
  • Pastor at St. Joseph Church in Chauvin
  • Founding Pastor of Holy Spirit Church in New Orleans

In addition to his pastoral work, Msgr. Roy served as:

  • Chaplain of the 159th Evacuation Hospital
  • Assistant Director of Communications
  • Member of the Board of Regents
  • Archdiocesan Consultor
  • Dean of the Terrebonne Deanery and Algiers Plaquemines Deanery
  • Ecclesiastical Notary in the Matrimonial Tribunal

He furthered his theological education, earning a Master of Arts degree from Notre Dame Seminary College in May 1970 and a Master of Religious Education degree from Notre Dame Seminary School of Theology in July 1976.

After decades of service, Msgr. Roy retired in 2011 and resided at Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center until his passing. Known as a humble, down-to-earth “people person,” he touched countless lives with compassion and faith.

A Cherished Family Legacy

Msgr. Roy is survived by his brothers, Kearn Roy and Pat Roy, and his sisters-in-law, Adley Roy and Jeanie Roy, all of New Roads. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who were blessed by his life.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Allen J. Roy, Sr. and Lucille Plauche Roy; his brother, Jerry Roy; sister-in-law Jeanette Roy; nephew and godson Gerard “Bug” Roy; and niece Christy Roy.
