Dwight graduated from Mansura High School in 1948, the last class to graduate in 11th grade, then from Loyola University in New Orleans with a degree in pharmacy. He then served in the US Army Medical Corps for several years before returning home to Louisiana and eventually settling in Marksville with his wife and family.
In Marksville he worked first at Firment’s Pharmacy then was the pharmacist at Avoyelles Hospital for many years until his retirement, often leaving home in the middle of the night or on weekends to make sure patients had the medications they needed.
Dwight believed strongly in community service. He served on the Marksville Town Council for three terms with a reputation for honesty and integrity. He was president of the Jaycees and the Spring Bayou Golf Club.
He was a Boy Scout leader, and himself an Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow in Scouting.
He also served his church and was a faithful attendee at Mass every Sunday. He taught pre-Cana to couples planning marriage. He served as an usher for many years at Mass. He was a Grand Knight of the third-degree Knights of Columbus and was a member of the fourth degree Knights of Columbus. He was also an original member of the Marian Men’s Movement, founded in January of 1992, who still meet to say a rosary and pray for people every week.
He received many honors in his lifetime, among those being chosen as an Outstanding Young Man of America in 1965 and as a member of the Marksville Court of Honor in 1979 for the 170-year celebration of the founding of Marksville.
Dwight will long be remembered for his kindness. He was never without a smile for everyone. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
His family would like to thank the staff of Valley View Nursing Home and All Saints Hospice with special thanks to Shanteria Washington and Tessa Aymond who provided such excellent care and kindness to him.
