POCKIN’ ON THE BAYOU: It's Almost That Time In Cottonport!!

COTTONPORT, La. — A beloved Cajun tradition is set to take center stage once again as the annual Pockin’ on the Bayou Easter Festival returns to Cottonport on Saturday, April 4, 2026, bringing together generations of families for a day full of culture, competition, and community celebration.

Rooted deeply in South Louisiana heritage, “egg pocking” — also known as egg knocking — has been a staple Easter tradition for decades. The simple yet competitive pastime involves two participants tapping hard-boiled eggs together, with the goal of cracking the opponent’s egg while keeping their own intact.

Cottonport has long been recognized as a hub for this tradition, with organized egg-knocking contests dating back to the 1950s. Over the years, what began as a friendly backyard competition has grown into a signature local festival, drawing participants and visitors from across Avoyelles Parish and beyond.

This year’s festival promises a full day of activities for all ages, blending old traditions with new attractions.

Festival Highlights Include:

7:00 a.m. – Run/Walk Registration at Unity Park

8:00 a.m. – 5K Run & Walk

In addition to the packed schedule, attendees can also enjoy a car show, local vendors, and plenty of family-friendly entertainment throughout the day.

While the festival has evolved over the years, its heart remains the same — bringing people together. For many families, egg pocking is more than a game; it’s a tradition passed down through generations, often accompanied by stories, laughter, and friendly competition around the Easter table.

Historically, participants have taken pride in preparing the “perfect egg,” with some even testing shells in advance or using specific boiling methods to gain an edge. But beyond the strategy, organizers say the true purpose of the festival is connection — celebrating community, culture, and the joy of Easter.

Whether you’re competing for bragging rights, enjoying the festivities, or simply soaking in the rich Cajun heritage, Pockin’ on the Bayou offers something for everyone.

The event will take place in Cottonport, with activities centered around the Town Square and Bayou Rouge.

Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to come out, participate, and continue a tradition that has stood the test of time in Avoyelles Parish.
