Thou Shalt Love Thy Neighbor
Looking Ahead: Building a Stronger Avoyelles in 2026
By Aliya Deshotel
As we step into a new year, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on who we are as a community and what kind of place we want Avoyelles to become. Our parish is filled with creativity, hard work, and heart. We have small businesses growing, new ideas taking shape, and people who genuinely care about this place. That gives us a strong foundation as we look ahead to 2026.
One thing I’ve noticed, especially among young adults my age, is how often people say they can’t wait to leave. I’ve heard it from former classmates, friends, and people I grew up with. Everyone’s path is their own, but I truly believe this: if we work together, we can make Avoyelles a place people want to stay.
A place where opportunity feels possible.
A place where community feels real.
A place where you can build a life you’re proud of.
There is beauty in small-town living.
There is value in knowing your neighbors, supporting local businesses, and growing together instead of apart.
And there is incredible potential right here at home, artists, business owners, educators, makers, innovators, quietly proving that success does not require leaving your roots behind.
In 2026, let’s focus on that growth.
Let’s continue showing up for one another’s projects, businesses, and ideas.
Let’s support people who are trying something new.
Let’s create an environment where young adults feel they don’t have to move away to make something of themselves.
Real progress doesn’t always come from big changes.
Often, it’s the small actions that matter most, choosing to learn before judging, offering encouragement instead of criticism, and recognizing the potential in our own community.
Scripture offers a simple reminder that still matters today:
“Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” (Matthew 22:39)
Not as a slogan, but as a way of living that strengthens any place we call home.
So this year, let’s celebrate what’s good about Avoyelles and continue building on what can be even better.
Let’s make space for new ideas.
Let’s lift each other up.
Let’s make our parish a place where people feel valued, encouraged, supported, and proud to stay.
Here’s to a year of growth, collaboration, and community.
Here’s to making 2026 a year where Avoyelles moves forward- together.
