Town Hall Planned on New Trash Service

Pelican Waste and the Avoyelles Parish Police Jury invite residents to learn about the new automated garbage pickup program ahead of its January 2027 launch.

A public town hall meeting will be held Wednesday, Nov. 4, to give Avoyelles Parish residents an opportunity to learn more about the new residential garbage collection service beginning in January 2027.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the LSU Ag Center on Highway 1 in Mansura. Representatives from Pelican Waste & Debris and the Avoyelles Parish Police Jury will explain the upcoming changes and answer questions from residents.

The parish is preparing to transition to a fully automated collection system using specially equipped trucks to lift and empty residential garbage containers.

Under the new contract, each residence will receive one 95-gallon container at no additional cost. Additional containers will be available for purchase through Pelican Waste.

The new containers are expected to be delivered in December, with residents beginning to use them in January 2027. Residents with compatible industrial-style containers will also be permitted to use them.

The upcoming town hall follows an Oct. 12 meeting attended by representatives of the Avoyelles Parish Police Jury, Pelican Waste, several parish mayors and municipal staff members. Pelican representatives discussed the new equipment, answered questions and distributed informational materials.

Topics at the Nov. 4 meeting will include container placement, acceptable household waste, additional cart purchases and collection procedures.

According to Pelican Waste, residential collection days will remain the same. Containers should be placed curbside the night before collection or no later than 4 a.m. on collection day, with adequate clearance for automated pickup.

Additional public informational meetings are expected in the coming weeks as the parish prepares for the transition.

All Avoyelles Parish residents are encouraged to attend.
