Tunica-Biloxi Chairman Marshall Pierite appointed to U.S. Treasury advisory committee

Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana Chairman Marshall Pierite has been appointed to a federal advisory committee that helps shape tax policies affecting Tribal governments, businesses and citizens nationwide.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent appointed Pierite to the seven-member Treasury Tribal Advisory Committee (TTAC), which advises on federal tax and financial policies affecting Tribal Nations.

The appointment places a local Tribal leader in discussions about federal policies that can affect economic development, government operations and financial opportunities for Native American communities. The committee advises the Treasury secretary on Tribal taxation, IRS training and financial assistance for Tribal governments.

“Federal tax policy may be decided in Washington, but its impact is felt in our communities, in the businesses we build, the services we provide and the opportunities we create for our children,” Pierite said.

He emphasized the importance of protecting Tribal sovereignty and ensuring that federal officials understand the economic challenges facing Tribal governments.

“I intend to make sure the realities facing Tribal governments are part of these conversations and advocate for policies that respect our right to determine our own future,” Pierite said. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Pierite has more than 30 years of experience in Tribal leadership, government operations and economic development.

In 2022, he was named Tribal Leader of the Year by the Native American Finance Officers Association.

Pierite previously served on the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's inaugural Tribal Intergovernmental Advisory Committee, which was created to strengthen communication between Tribal governments and federal housing officials.

The appointment also carries local economic significance. The Tunica-Biloxi Tribe owns and operates Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville, a major employer in Central Louisiana.

Pierite will work with Tribal leaders to recommend federal policies on taxation, economic development and financial challenges.

In an Oct. 13 letter, U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach welcomed Pierite to the committee, which will help shape federal policies affecting Tribal finances and economic development.
