In a celebration of dedication, compassion, and professional excellence, two Avoyelles Parish residents were recognized among Louisiana’s most outstanding leaders in child welfare during the inaugural Champions of Child Wel- fare: A Homecoming symposium, held Oct. 3, at Northwestern State University (NSU) in Natchitoches.

The symposium was hosted by NSU and the Louisiana Title IV-E Scholar Program, bringing together educators, state officials, social workers, and agency leaders from across Louisiana to celebrate those who have made significant contributions to child and family well-being. The event was presented in partnership with the Louisiana Child Welfare Training Academy (LCWTA), the University Workforce Alliance, and the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), all of which work collaboratively to strengthen the professional foundation of Louisiana’s child welfare system.

Eriana Carter of Marksville was named Child Welfare Professional of the Year for her exceptional service and leadership. Carter serves as a Child Protection Services Supervisor in Rapides Parish, overseeing a team dedicated to protecting vulnerable children and supporting family reunification. A graduate of McNeese State University, where she earned her master’s degree in criminal justice, Carter joined DCFS in June 2020 and quickly rose through the ranks due to her strong work ethic and deep compassion for families. She was promoted to her current supervisory role in April 2025. Carter was honored for her ability to balance professionalism and empathy while navigating the difficult realities of child protection work. She shared that her guiding belief is simple yet powerful: “Every child deserves a chance to thrive, even on the most difficult days.”

Tiffany LaBorde of Bunkie received the Child Welfare Alumni of the Year award, recognizing her outstanding commitment to advocacy and mental health support for children and families. LaBorde earned her Bachelor of Social Work degree from Northwestern State University in 2022, where she participated in the Title IV-E Scholar Program, and later completed her Master of Social Work from Loui- siana State University in 2024. She now serves as a Clinical Mental Health Therapist with the Children’s Advocacy Network, where she works with youth who have experienced trauma. During her time at NSU, LaBorde served as both secretary and president of the Social Work Club, demonstrating leadership and dedication that continues to define her career. She credits her success to her mentors, peers, and the support systems that sustain child welfare professionals in a demanding field.

Through the recognition of professionals like Carter and LaBorde, NSU and its partners reaffirmed their commitment to preparing, empowering and celebrating those who dedicate their careers to protecting and uplifting Louisiana’s children. Their achievements stand as a proud example for Avoyelles Parish — a reminder that compassion, education, and perseverance continue to make a difference in the lives of countless families across the state.
