Healing Tribal Strong 5K Brings Community Together in Support of Those Affected by Cancer

For many families, cancer is a journey that impacts not only the individual, but also caregivers, friends, and entire communities. This October, a local event will once again offer Avoyelles Parish residents a way to show their support.

The Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana will host its Third Annual Healing Tribal Strong 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, October 10, at the Tunica-Biloxi Reservation in Marksville. The event is designed as both a community gathering and a show of support for cancer survivors, patients, caregivers, and families who have lost loved ones to the disease.

Runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels are invited to participate, making the 5K accessible to those who want to compete as well as those who simply want to walk alongside family and friends. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Mary Bird Perkins Foundation and support cancer-related resources and services for patients and families across the region.

The annual 5K has also become an extension of the Tribe’s larger Healing Tribal Strong initiative, which focuses on the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of people affected by cancer. Through monthly virtual gatherings, the program gives survivors, patients and caregivers an opportunity to connect with others, share their experiences and discuss topics such as nutrition, fitness and wellness. The October event takes that sense of connection beyond the virtual setting and into the wider Marksville and Avoyelles Parish community.

“Events like Healing Tribal Strong bring our community together in a powerful way, showing those affected by cancer that they are supported every step of the journey,” Tunica-Biloxi Chairman Marshall Pierite said.

The Healing Tribal Strong 5K will take place at 150 Melacon Road in Marksville. Registration and additional race day information, including race start times and event-day details, are available on the 5K website. For those who attend, the day will include more than the 5K itself. Local vendors are expected to be on site with fresh produce, handmade goods and other items, adding a community-market element to the gathering. Sponsorship and vendor opportunities are also available.

Whether participants come to run for a personal best, walk in memory of someone they love or simply support a friend or neighbor, the event offers the community a chance to gather around a cause that has touched countless families.
