Memorial Day Events in Avoyelles
Memorial Day, a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to their country, will be commemorated nationwide on Monday, May 25.
Below are scheduled events in Avoyelles:
Friday, May 22
10 a.m. - Military Appreciation Event
A Military Appreciation event honoring all who have served will be held Friday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Fifth Ward Community Center, Island Room, located at 152 Schoolhouse Road in Marksville.
The event is open to the public and will recognize local veterans for their service and sacrifice.
The event is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Friends of the Avoyelles Parish Libraries.

Saturday, May 23
9 a.m. - KC Council 9418 Memorial Day Observance
The Fifth Ward/Moncla Knights of Columbus Council #9418 will host a Memorial Day Observance on Saturday, May 23, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Fifth Ward Veterans Memorial, located along the Kramer Walking Trail at 1924 Hwy. 1 in Fifth Ward.
This year’s program, titled “Communication – From War to Home,” will be presented by Krystle Reynaud, granddaughter of Field Corporal Tech 5 George Bonnette, a World War II veteran who served in the Half Track Operators Unit.
The Cenla Honor Guard will present the colors, with assistance from members of the Monsignor Van der Putten Council 2333 Color Guard.
Brendon Reynaud will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
Attendees are invited to bring personal communications or memorabilia to share for display during the program.
Deacon Darrell Dubroc of Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Martin of Tours Catholic Churches will deliver the opening prayer.
Pastor Keith Lamartiniere of Fifth Ward Baptist Church will offer the closing prayer, followed by the playing of Taps by the Cenla Honor Guard.
Janis Bonnette Ducote and Kenneth Ducote will present a Veterans Memorial wreath in honor of all deceased veterans.
Refreshments will be provided by the Our Lady of Lourdes Altar Society.
Council #9418 invites the public to attend this solemn tribute honoring those who gave their lives in service to the nation and reflecting on the true cost of freedom.

Monday, May 25
9 a.m. - Catholic Daughters at St. Joseph Cemetery
The Catholic Daughters will host a Memorial Day prayer service on Monday at 9 a.m. The ceremony will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery No. 1 at the mausoleum on Waddil Street.
In case of rain, the service will be held inside the mausoleum.
The public is invited to attend.
