Governor Jeff Landry and State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley announced that diplomas awarded to Louisiana public high school graduates in the Class of 2026 will include a commemorative America 250 seal. The seal recognizes the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and supports the state’s ongoing commitment to civics education.

Governor Landry said the anniversary marks the moment when the Founding Fathers declared America’s independence. He said the commemorative seal is intended to help students understand the importance of that history and see themselves as part of the nation’s future.

Dr. Brumley said the Class of 2026 will graduate during a significant moment in the country’s history. He said the America 250 seal honors students while reinforcing Louisiana’s focus on civics instruction.

America 250 is a national initiative created by Congress to commemorate the founding of the United States in 2026. Each state has created its own commission to plan recognitions and events. Members of the Louisiana America 250 Commission include Dr. Cade Brumley, LDOE Assistant Superintendent Trey Folse and BESE member Sandy Holloway.

The commemorative seal aligns with ongoing efforts in Louisiana to strengthen civics education for K through 12 students. In 2022, the state adopted new social studies standards known as the Freedom Framework. The standards highlight the history of the United States and the nation’s continued efforts to form a more perfect union. Louisiana has also advised other states on adopting similar standards.

The 2025 through 2026 school year is the first year students may earn the Freedom Framework Diploma Endorsement. This recognition is awarded to high school students who score Mastery or above on the LEAP 2025 civics assessment. Students who earn the endorsement will receive an additional seal on their diploma and wear a red, white and blue honor cord at graduation.

Louisiana also holds an annual Celebrate Freedom Week to coincide with Constitution Day and Constitution Week. The observance promotes civic understanding and constitutional literacy among students. The state has partnered with the Reagan Foundation and The National WWII Museum on statewide events during this week.
