Oct. 1 deadline nears for FEMA disaster assistance

Avoyelles Parish residents affected by Tropical Storm Arthur have until Thursday, Oct. 1, to apply for federal disaster assistance through FEMA.

Homeowners, renters and students who suffered damage or losses from the June 17-24 storm may be eligible for assistance.

Avoyelles is among six Louisiana parishes approved for FEMA Individual Assistance.

Assistance may help with temporary housing, certain home repairs, accessibility improvements and replacement of some items needed for work or school.

Residents can apply at DisasterAssistance.gov, through the FEMA mobile app or by calling 800-621-3362.

Applicants who receive a denial letter may still be able to provide additional information or appeal the decision within 60 days.

Low-interest disaster loans are also available through the U.S. Small Business Administration, with an Oct. 1 deadline for physical property damage applications. For SBA information, call 800-659-2955.
