Summer Food Support for Avoyelles Families
As summer approaches families across Avoyelles Parish will have access to multiple programs aimed at making sure children have enough to eat while school is out.
SUN Bucks - Provide Direct Grocery Support
Families across Louisiana are beginning to receive assistance through the SUN Bucks program which provides a one time payment of $120 per eligible school aged child to help cover grocery costs during the summer months.
The benefit is available to children ages 5 to 18 and will reach many families automatically. Children who have received SNAP, FITAP, KCSP, or income based Medicaid between July 1, 2025, and Aug. 20, 2026 may already qualify. Students approved for free or reduced price meals through their school may also be included.
Most families will not need to apply. However some households may still need to submit an application especially those whose children attend schools where meals are provided to all students but individual applications were not completed. Applications are being accepted through Aug. 20.
Benefits began going out in mid May. Families already receiving SNAP or those who received SUN Bucks last year will see funds added to their existing EBT card. Other households will receive a preloaded card in the mail. Officials encourage families to make sure their mailing address is up to date with their child’s school or benefit programs to avoid delays.
Local Schools Continue Weekly Food Box Program
In addition to the statewide SUN Bucks program the Avoyelles Parish School District will once again provide free meals to children 18 and under through its summer food box program. The program will distribute food boxes every Monday beginning June 1 through July 20. Each child is eligible to receive one box per week.
Registration is required to participate. Parents and guardians must complete the online form by May 25 through the Avoyelles Parish School Board website Facebook page or by using the provided registration link. Families can also scan the QR code on the Summer Food Boxes flyer to quickly access the registration form.
Food boxes will be available for pickup from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Marksville Elementary, Bunkie High School, Avoyelles High School, Lafargue Elementary and Riverside Elementary. If a child is not present at pickup only a parent or guardian listed on the registration form will be allowed to collect the box.
The program is funded through the USDA Summer Food Service Program and administered through the state. While contents may vary slightly most food items are shelf stable and do not require refrigeration.
School officials say the effort is a part of the district’s continued commitment to supporting students and families beyond the classroom. For more information contact Jenny Welch at 318-253-5982.
