Avoyelles schools remind families & students of new marijuana law

The Avoyelles Parish School Board reminds students and families that Louisiana law regarding marijuana possession on and near school campuses changed Aug. 1.

Under Act 305 of the 2026 Regular Session, possession of marijuana on school property, within 2,000 feet of school property or on a school bus can carry serious criminal penalties.

According to information shared by the school district, a violation can result in up to one year of imprisonment, with or without hard labor, and a fine of up to $1,000.

The law also applies to smoking or vaping controlled dangerous substances in those areas, including THC vape products.

The district stressed that criminal penalties are separate from school disciplinary action.

For students in grades 6 through 12, a first occurrence involving marijuana may result in a recommendation for expulsion. A second or subsequent occurrence requires expulsion for at least two complete school semesters and referral to the district attorney.

The law applies to public and nonpublic elementary, middle and high schools in Louisiana.

School officials are encouraging families to discuss the consequences of bringing, possessing, smoking or vaping marijuana or THC products at or near school.

The district also emphasized that not knowing a person is within 2,000 feet of school property is not considered a defense under the law.

The Avoyelles Parish School Board is asking parents and guardians to review the new requirements with students and help reinforce the importance of making responsible choices on and around school campuses.
