Alexis "Lexi" Barbry

CARENCRO ~ Alexis Marlayna Barbry, lovingly known as “Lexi,” passed away on Tuesday, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 28 years old from Carencro, LA.

A celebration of Lexi’s life will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026 starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 2:00 p.m., with a Catholic Service at 12:00 p.m. at Melancon Funeral Home, 4117 N. University Avenue, Carencro, LA.

Guests are encouraged to wear purple, Lexi’s favorite color, or bright, joyful colors as we come together to celebrate her 28 years of life and the happiness she brought to so many.

Diagnosed with lissencephaly, Lexi’s life was defined not by limitations, but by strength, resilience, and a light that touched everyone around her. She had a way of bringing people together—through her smile, her presence, and the quiet but powerful impact she made on those who knew her.

Lexi’s journey was one of courage. She faced life’s challenges with determination, inspiring not only her family but an entire community. Through her life, she became a symbol of love, perseverance, and the beauty of seeing the world through a different lens.

Lexi was deeply cherished by her family and friends in Avoyelles Parish and Lafayette Parish, who surrounded her with unwavering love and devotion. She was also a proud member of the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana. Lexi’s life inspired the creation of the Alexis Barbry Scholarship, a lasting reflection of her legacy—one that will continue to open doors, create opportunities, and champion inclusion for years to come.

Beyond her immediate circle, Lexi’s story reached many through This Ability Podcast, where her life and impact helped bring awareness, understanding, and compassion to the disability community and beyond. Her legacy will continue to live on in every story shared, every barrier broken, and every life touched.

Lexi found joy in travel and adventure, sharing unforgettable experiences with her family along the way. From a Disney Cruise to the Bahamas to visits to the highest mountain in the Smoky Mountain range, and trips to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee, she embraced every moment. She especially loved visiting Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio, a fully accessible park built for individuals of all abilities. Lexi was also deeply involved in her community, participating in the DREAMS Bowling League, supporting fundraisers for Miles Perrett, attending Healing House Family Adventure Day, and taking part in many other special events.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents Joseph L. Hooks, III, Roberta Guillot Hooks, Earl J. Barbry, Sr, Gail Kelone Barbry, and step-grandmother Elodie M. DeMary.

She is survived by her mother, Mary Hooks Baudoin, step-father Ronnie “Speedy” Baudoin, her father Earl J. Barbry, Jr. (Julie), her stepbrother Earl J. Barbry, III, her stepsister Angelica Pearl Barbry, Uncle Joey Barbry (Misty), Cousin Annabelle Barbry (Dylan), her step-grandparents Glenn J. Lexi was surrounded by incredible care throughout her life, supported at home by a devoted team of LPNs, CNAs, and PCAs who became like family. She was also homeschooled by compassionate educators who ensured she received an enriching and adaptive education, including Carolyn Campos, Penny Hale, and others. Lexi is a 2019 graduate of Carencro High School.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alexis Barbry Scholarship at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, continuing Lexi’s mission of inclusion, access, and opportunity. The UL LIFE (Learning is for Everyone) Program provides students with intellectual and developmental disabilities access to a comprehensive postsecondary experience that emphasizes academic enrichment, career development, and independent living skills within a university setting.

Contributions to the Alexis Barbry Scholarship may be mailed to the UL Lafayette Foundation, P.O. Box 43657, Lafayette, LA 70504. Please include “Fund #02094” in the memo line to ensure proper designation. Once the fund reaches $25,000, it will be transferred into an endowed account, allowing the scholarship to support UL LIFE students in perpetuity.

Though her time here was far too short, Lexi’s impact was immeasurable. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and inspiration that will never fade.
